Truck Safety

Safety is a priority for St Marys at all of its operations. Minimizing the shared use of roads by trucks and pedestrians is a significant consideration that has been identified as a key concern. Through our more than 90 years of experience and operation of over 40 ready-mix concrete plants and 12 aggregates pits and quarries across Ontario, we have developed substantial experience, knowledge and policies to ensure trucks using our sites meet our rigorous standards.

Although we will not operate our own haul trucks at the proposed quarry, St Marys has a truck safety policy for broker and independent truckers that includes:

  • rules regarding local speed limits;
  • using designated haul routes;
  • not arriving before operational hours;
  • obeying all road signage; and,
  • keeping vehicles in good operating condition.

We have strict penalties, including the right to refuse to load any truck that is found to be in violation of our policy. We have found this policy to be effective at our other sites.

We are committed to working with the community to develop solutions to protect the safety of everyone on the road. In other communities where we operate, our neighbours help keep us informed about any trucking issues, including respecting the rules of the road and using the designated haul routes. If there is a concern about any of our truck drivers we encourage our neighbours to contact us so we can take appropriate action, which can include banning the truck in question from the site. In some communities, we have worked with the local police force to help us monitor and enforce truck speed and safety.
